Refrigerated Beaches anyone?

I guess if they can build an indoor ski slope in Dubai, building a refrigerated beach was inevitable. The Palazzo Versace fashion house is building a hotel to compete with a Armani branded hotel and they needed a differentiator. Dubai already boasts of the worlds first 7 star hotel (whatever that means). Full story here.

  1. Dubai already boasts of the worlds first 7 star hotel (whatever that means).

What that means is that you get picked up in Rolls Royces the moment you land at the airport and have a private butler catering to your needs while at the hotel. And they make it a point of parking all the Italian super cars that their local clients come in, right up front. I went to the Burj in May of this year and found it to be an extremely gaudy place that felt like Vegas on steroids. I had dinner at the restaurant (the one in the lower floors) and even found that to be over-the-top. Not something I’d recommend. One of these days, I’ll post pics.

  2. The relevant wikipedia entry names several “7 star” hotels under construction. None of them are in a developed country. They’re coming up in places like China, India, Fiji, Iran, Pakistan, and Philippines. And then there’s the Burj - the tallest hotel in the world, in a place where there is no shortage of real estate. Does that tell you something?

  3. I forgot to mention the availability of one of the best tasting water I have ever had: from the same people who make Glenlivet Scotch. The Burj is one of the few hotels in the world where you can taste this (yes, I know it’s just water but I mentioned the fabulous taste to my friends before actually looking at the bottle).

And speaking of it being the tallest building in the world, at least some of you might remember this:
