Baden Powell Trio - The Frankfurt Opera Concert

I’ve always considered that Amazon had these weird ways of correlating products to make their recommendations. Yesterday was no exception. I had bought an album a while ago by Ramiro Musotto called Sudaka: Some good mix of electronic, samba, techno dance, urban, hip hop, etc.

I received yesterday an Amazon email saying that since I had bought Sudaka then I should take a look at this newly released album from the Baden Powell Trio: The Frankfurt Opera Concert. The album was recored live at The Frankfurt Opera House back in 1975. As usual it had nothing to do with the Sudaka album, with the obvious exception that both (Baden Powell and Ramiro Musotto) are Brazilians.

Having said that, maybe Amazon does have a different way of associating products because indeed I loved the album. It literally blew me away. At this point I’ve heard the album at least 5 times. It’s been playing in my iTunes ever since I bought it. Almost every track is worth listening to. It reminded me at the feeling I got when I heard Rodrigo and Gabriela’s first album: unexpected, engaging and overall fantastic.

The opening “Valsa Da Euridice” is the perfect opening. Transitioning with “Asa Branca” and the melancholic “Samba Triste”. “Pescador” is absolutely beautiful. The acoustic bass in “Berceuse” is brilliant. The solo guitar in the first four minutes of “Variacao Sobre Canto de Ossanha” are just unbelievable.

This is an studio version of: “Canto de Ossanha” in youtube… enjoy!

Outsourcing Childcare

That reliable source of news for those of us tired with the war and subprime credit crunch, The Onion, has a bit on outsourcing childcare to India and other emerging nations.

Report: Many U.S. Parents Outsourcing Child Care Overseas

This may be in jest but quite a few people I know (including my own extended family members) have been doing this for ages by sending their children to India to their grandparents and such.

Suzanna Lubrano

Césaria Évora is the singer that comes to mind when people think of the Cape Verde islands. Now, after seeing her live late last year in Cape Verde, I believe Suzanna Lubrano can give Évora a run for her money. The music styles are very different. While Évora sings a type of music called morna (a type of blues), Lubrano sings a more upbeat type of music called zouk. The music is infectious and great to dance to and Lubrana has a distinctly sexy voice. Her smouldering looks don’t hurt either. I am proud to say that she calls The Netherlands home (she moved here with her parents when she was four).

Check out her music video of the part English song ‘Tudo Pa Bo’:

Malayalam Rock

Like a lot of other Keralites I know, I grew up enjoying hard rock and heavy metal (especially during a phase in the late ’80s) and I still enjoy a good head-banging song. But apart from a band called 13 A.D. (which was semi-decent), I don’t know of any good Kerala rock bands. 13 A.D. sang in English. Then of course there’s Kim Thayil of Soundgarden but he doesn’t count as he was born in Seattle (to Keralite parents).

Now comes an interesting band tantalizingly named Avial. (Avial is a mixed vegetable curry that’s a specialty in Kerala.) They sing in Malayalam. Check out the stylish video of their debut song called “Nada Nada” (walk, walk):

Kissing Passionately

Youtube is sooo passé especially after the acquisition. Let’s turn our attention to some of the alternatives. Especially the niche ones focusing on specific areas. We have mentioned the porn equivalent, pornotube.com (not safe at work) before. The Wall Street Journal today has an article on sites focusing on howto videos (similar to the text equivalents wikihow.com and ehow.com). The most prominent one is Video Jug. Among their most popular howto videos is “How to kiss passionately:”

There are many other interesting videos there for the clueless amongst us. Another howto video site is viewdo.com.

Some of the other (user generated) video sharing sites out there include Your Daily Media, Humping Frog (may not be safe at work), That Video Site, SmitHappens, and I-Am-Bored. If you know of any other cool sites, let us know.

Pepsi Commercial

This is a few months old but it’s quite cool. Since we don’t have TV anymore, I have to rely on the Internet to see commercials. This Pepsi commercial stars SNL great Jimmy Fallon and Indie superstar Parker Posey.
