Roy Zimmerman at The Marsh

Just got back from watching Roy Zimmerman’s ‘Faulty Intelligence’ at the Berkeley venue of The Marsh. This is the first time I’ve seen Zimmerman perform, except for a short excerpt that he performed as a lead-in to another play a couple of weeks back, and I was very impressed with his show. He’s a satirist, comedian and musician all rolled into one, and his show is a laugh riot from start to finish. The satire is sharp and clever, the wordplay is exquisite and he can even sing. Listen to the following clip for a taste:

Godspell

I had never seen a play inside a church before. Granted, “Godspell” is a religious musical in the same vein as “Jesus Christ Superstar”; yet it was a weird feeling to see it performed on the altar of a local church last night. We went primarily to see a friend who was part of the cast.

The play was presented by the Studio Theater of California (STOC). It is based on the 1971 off-Broadway — it later moved to Broadway — play by Stephen Schwartz and John-Michael Tebelak. It is based on the gospel according to St. Matthew. And despite my lackadaisical attitude towards organized religion, I had a great time. The cast was talented and the songs were performed with flair and great enthusiasm.

Tonight is the last show. If any of you Bay Area residents are looking for something to do tonight, I recommend this musical. You can reserve your tickets by e-mailing STOC.
