Robotic Braces

My cousin Kailas has always been the brainiest in my extended family as far as I am concerned. When he was in his early teens, he’d bug me with annoying questions about computers whenever I visited his family in Lubbock, TX. I struggled to answer most of these questions then. He eventually grew up, went to M.I.T. and got interested in robotic braces to help the injured. After years of hard work, the fruits of his vision, a company called Myomo has won FDA approval for their first product, the e100, that will soon be available in the US. Today’s New York Times has a nice feature on Myomo and its potential. Way to go little brother!

The iPhone

The iPhone is finally here from the company now known simply as Apple Inc. What a beauty! Too bad it’s going to be a while before it’s available in Europe. It will be time to replace my trusty old Nano when that happens.

Compact Camera Research

December is a great time to buy electronic items such as digital cameras. My wife had ruined our previous point and shoot (Canon Powershot S50) by dipping it (accidentally, she says) in the frigid waters of the North Atlantic a few months ago. It was time for a replacement. When I started my research, I was amazed at the choice offered.

The S50 is a great camera and I have been very happy with it for the last three years. But it’s a bit bulky and doesn’t take good photos at low light. The highest ISO setting for that camera is 400 and it’s very noisy at that level. But it allowed manual focus, and allowed aperture priority and shutter priority modes. It also took photos in the Canon RAW (CRW) format. I knew soon after I started looking that I couldn’t get all these features in a slim camera. I had to go with something like the new flagship of the Powershot series, the G7, to get all these features (though even it, doesn’t take RAW photographs). The G7 is 43mm thick as opposed to the 42mm for the S50. I wanted something far slimmer. Especially because I also bought a new dSLR.

Read on for my short list and a summary of my research into P & S cameras.

iPods on Vending Machines

More and more vending machines seem to be popping up selling iPods and accessories. Apparently there is one at SFO though I haven’t seen it yet. If any of you are visiting me and would like to bring me a last minute gift, this is a new option :-)

The Crash Before the Fall

It turns out that Stefan Eriksson of by-two Ferrari fame and his boss Carl Freer of Gizmondo fame burned through £160 million in 18 months flat. Investigators are at wits end trying to figure out how so much money can be spent so fast despite the $ half-a-million cars (Maybach, Ferrari Enzo, Mercedes SLR McLaren…), race horses, yachts, fancy watches, and £ million salaries.

Where did all that money come from? American investors who bought into their story of huge demand for the Gizmondo console, a portable gaming device.

What was it that P T Barnum supposedly never said?
