Indian Navy: 1. Pirates: 0

With all the negative press the U.S. military gets, it’s nice to see the military of another country (especially one I have a connection to) in the news for unleashing righteous violence on those who deserve it!

Kerals.com - tourism, misogyny, matrimony, porn

Saw this story related to one of our own today. Some bloggers were surprised to see their content ripped off and posted on another site without their permission. When confronted about it, the site - which claims to be THE premier destination for Kerala tourism online - responded in true Mal (now there’s an appropriate bi-lingual pun) fashion with a torrent of misogynistic abuse. Read on and weep.

The funniest thing is that these same buffoons run a matrimonial site. With such a criminal mindset among its highest executives (the Shiva guy quoted extensively in the link above is their director of operations), who can bet against matrimonial pictures being used on their porn sites? I’m sure these guys have some director of Photoshop operations as well. Methinks this is a promotion just waiting for some sharp cyber-crime sleuth. Tourism, misogyny, matrimony, and porn - all in a day’s work for the fine people at Kerals.com. Buyer beware.

The Myspace Hoax

The latest New Yorker has a very disturbing article about the suicide of a thirteen year old girl after becoming the victim of a tragic hoax played on her by vile neighbors. The incident happened in late 2006 but came to light to the public only in November of last year. I don’t want to summarize the story. Read it at your own leisure. It’s written by restaurant critic extraordinaire Lauren Collins.

Once you read it, I’d be curious to know what you think of the perpetrators. Are they guilty (as you will discover, no charges were brought)? Especially the adult(s) involved?

Spanking Sally

If you thought the recent ban on trans fats in certain cities was indicative of too much government interference in our lives, wait till you hear about the idiotic bill that California Assemblywoman Sally Lieber has introduced recently. Lieber, a Democrat from the city I live in (Mountain View), is proposing to ban spanking of children under the age of 4. She wants to make this a misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in jail and a fine of up to $1000. California would be the first state in the nation to ban parents from spanking their children. This is government interference taken to a whole new level.

I don’t have children (neither does Lieber from what I can gather); so I won’t comment on the ways of disciplining young children. But do we really want the cops to come in to our houses and supervise how we bring up our children? Shouldn’t they be out there solving real crimes?

Fortunately, the press seems to be almost unanimous in condemning this bill and I hope that will influence the decision makers at the State Assembly. Check out the op-eds on the San Francisco Chronicle, The Contra Costa Times and The Wall Street Journal (subscription).

Strike of the Crossed Legs

Colombian women are using the oldest trick in the book to punish their boyfriends and husbands: refusing sex. They are advocating a sex ban until the men (gang members) give up violence. The strike is aptly called the strike of crossed legs. New way to achieve world peace?

Auto Sex

The word auto-sex is something I hadn’t heard before. But now a man in Bratislava, Slovakia, has been arrested after crashing his auto(mobile) while having auto-sex. Got to love the English language. Bloody brilliant, I say!

Killer in Business Class

I find it really amazing that an alleged child killer got to travel in business class, and gorge himself on prawns, duck and even drink champagne during his flight to the US. Whether or not John Mark Karr killed that girl is besides the point. If you are a strong suspect for such a brutal murder, you should be handcuffed and forced to sit next to the toilet in coach, not put in business class! This is where the American tax payer’s money is going… treating sick criminals to champagne. Shame on the big bad government!

If it were me making these decisions, this guy would have been put inside the toilet or in the cargo hold. The fact that he is now in some small cell is little consolation.

Blood on the tracks

By now, most of you must have heard about the series of bomb blasts that ripped through the suburban railway system of the Indian metropolis of Mumbai, on the evening of July 11. Seven blasts in all, precisely timed to go off within minutes of each other, which left over 180 people dead and injured over 700 others. The people of India have been dealing with the insidious effects of terrorism for several decades, but the scope and sophistication of the latest attacks left even the most hardened of cynics struggling to come to grips with it. The media were quick to christen this India’s own 7/11, and are calling it a watershed event in the history of terrorism in the country.

I did what everyone does in such situations; called up friends who are in the affected city, and then tried to digest the enormity of the news. Living abroad, a sense of distance is inevitable, but after talking to several people in India, I could feel that the mood towards such acts of terror is changing. Beneath the surface shock and grief, there is a groundswell of anger.
