The Myspace Hoax

The latest New Yorker has a very disturbing article about the suicide of a thirteen year old girl after becoming the victim of a tragic hoax played on her by vile neighbors. The incident happened in late 2006 but came to light to the public only in November of last year. I don’t want to summarize the story. Read it at your own leisure. It’s written by restaurant critic extraordinaire Lauren Collins.

Once you read it, I’d be curious to know what you think of the perpetrators. Are they guilty (as you will discover, no charges were brought)? Especially the adult(s) involved?

Atonement

Forgive me Mother, for I have sinned. I have gloated gleefully at the misfortune of another. I smiled smugly while the teenage punk got pulled over by the fuzz. I even joined my 101-mates in rubber necking at his shiny new Mustang, surrounded by not one, but two cop cars. I cranked up the stereo and sped along, delirious with contentment at the situation.

The unfortunate Darwin Award hopeful had only a few miles ago, cut in front of me twice without signaling. For no apparent reason as there was enough space and little traffic on the freeway. To add insult to injury, he had tapped his brake to taunt me. He probably didn’t have the radar detector that had warned me about the snooping cops in the neighborhood. I suppressed all of my usual road rage demons and let the dice fall where they did, hoping against hope, the *#!@ing idiot (sorry) gets caught.

I shall atone for my sins by driving at the speed limit for one day this week.
