A Year Off from the Rodent Race

I finally did it! I quit my job, sold my flat and am already on my way to a journey that I hope will be life changing. After thinking very hard about this for at least a year and after long and painful conversations with those near and dear to me, I have decided to take at least a year off and travel the world mostly to exotic places that I haven’t spent much time in. Alone. I have no specific itinerary yet but am going to make them as I go along. I am only packing a small rucksack with a change of clothes for a week. I am not even taking a camera. I want to experience everything first hand and have my journal and this blog as my place to record my experience as I travel the world in search of meaning for my existence. I am not sure how much internet access I’ll have during the next year or so but I’ll try to update this blog with my experiences with the curious people, animals and places I will encounter whether it be in the train to Tibet or among the lemurs in Madagascar.

I am sooo shit scared but at the same time the adrenalin levels have never been higher. I am already in my first stop… Beijing, China and am writing this from here. More later… Zai Jian and Ni Hau.

(Hic) Sarkozy

Vive le Gaul. The latest incumbent of the Elysée palace has been caught drunk at the G8 summit. French surrender or not, I say we should give the man a break. He might have had a few too many of his country’s fine wine. Who can blame him for that? Or did he really have some Vodka with RasPutin?

Targeting Virgins

A Dutch (who else?) escort agency has announced a service just for virgins. Computer geekdom is the target market. They will provide a three hour (minimum) service during which the participants will explore each others body, take baths together, massage each other, etc. At the end of the sessions, the virgin geeks will come out knowing how to pleasure a woman. Tall order.

Tech Support from the Middle Ages

When the book replaced the scroll…

Suzanna Lubrano

Césaria Évora is the singer that comes to mind when people think of the Cape Verde islands. Now, after seeing her live late last year in Cape Verde, I believe Suzanna Lubrano can give Évora a run for her money. The music styles are very different. While Évora sings a type of music called morna (a type of blues), Lubrano sings a more upbeat type of music called zouk. The music is infectious and great to dance to and Lubrana has a distinctly sexy voice. Her smouldering looks don’t hurt either. I am proud to say that she calls The Netherlands home (she moved here with her parents when she was four).

Check out her music video of the part English song ‘Tudo Pa Bo’:

Bathroom Mania

Dutch designer Meike van Schijndel designs toilets and one of her controversial designs is called ‘Kisses’. These are pouty woman’s mouth shaped men’s urinals. Quoting from the product literature for ‘Kisses’:

‘Kisses!’ transforms a daily event into a blushing experience! Works better than aiming at the fly! This is one target men will never miss!

McDonald’s thought well of the product and installed in one of their outlets in Holland only to have it removed later due to complaints by a shocked (male) American tourist. Do Americans have to enforce their silly political correctness elsewhere in the world?

The iPhone

The iPhone is finally here from the company now known simply as Apple Inc. What a beauty! Too bad it’s going to be a while before it’s available in Europe. It will be time to replace my trusty old Nano when that happens.

Online Etiquette

David Pogue writes in the NYT about the lack of courtesy in online forums. Luckily for us at rantlust, we are not big enough for the morons with bad grammar and bad etiquette to comment frequently. The disagreements have been mostly civil and polite even if heated. Some theories that Pogue has about the lack of etiquette (quoting verbatim):

  • On the Internet, you’re anonymous. Since you don’t have to face the person you’re dumping on, you don’t see any reason to display courtesy.
  • On the Internet, you’re anonymous. You worry that your comments might get lost in the shuffle, so you lay it on thick to enhance your noticeability.
  • Young people who spend lots of time online are, in essence, replacing in-person social interactions with these online exchanges. With so much less experience conversing in the real world, they haven’t picked up on the value of treating people civilly. That is, they haven’t yet hit the stage of life when getting things like friends, a spouse and a job depend on what kind of person you are.

Sarcasm in posts/comments are okay but let’s hope that unnecessary personal attacks and hostile comments don’t cloud our enjoyment of this blog.
