Cricket Versus Baseball

So I was reading some past posts that talked about baseball and cricket in the same breath. Didn’t get a chance to get on that tar baby, but instead I figured I might as well start another one. So I decided that I would instigate a debate between the purists on what would happen if we assembled a group of cricketers and baseball players and asked to play a game of cricket first and then baseball. What would happen?

The Poor Nation Syndrome

Anyone from India, as well as other developing countries, probably has family and friends who exerted tremendous pressure on them to get ahead in life, specifically to be a doctor or an engineer. This trend in the Indian middle class is dominant and probably has something to do with the state of the Indian economy and its new found status as a global IT powerhouse. But we are here to discuss a slightly different theme. (Read more…)

Million Little Pieces

I just finished reading the controversial book million little pieces by James Frey.  In spite of the controversy surrounding the book, I do believe the book serves its greater purpose of exposing the perils of addiction through a story that is surreal and sometimes deeply introspective.  For what it is worth, this book could be helpful to people who are at cross roads in their lives and need some inspiration and perspective.  Ofcourse, finding time to read at that critical juncture in one’s life could prove to be chalenging, but regardless, it serves it’s purpose.

Another doomsday prediction by Stephen Hawkings

Stephen Hawkings the brilliant physicist is at it again……doomsday predictions! The latest is on global warming and how the earth could be like Venus and have surface temperature of 250 degrees centigrade and rain sulphuric acid. Over the years Stephen has been criticized for his doomsday predictions by many in the academic and related disciplines.

Is colonizing the moon or mars the next step in preserving human life? certainly food for thought.

Trains, Automobiles and United Airlines

To term it the worst travel experience in my life would be untrue, but it does come pretty damn close. I am referring to the 24+ hours I spent at O’Hare International airport, courtesy of United Airlines. There is a reason why some companies go into bankruptcy, unfortunately for us some come out. My ordeal started at noon on the 20th of June. My family had just concluded a 20+ hour trip from Bangalore on Lufthansa. The flight landed on time and the family was out in about 40 minutes after their customs and immigration clearance. (Read more…)

Shopping Online

I spend a lot of my time trying to understand customers and their online preferences. My interest is predominantly centered around understanding decisions individuals make or don’t take in their online shopping experience. Obviously, companies spend significant amounts of money to understand and master website usability. However, the variables in the macro environment make it difficult to understand all the idiocyncrasies of the buying process. The classic book Don’t make me think by Steve Krug provides interesting insights into such usability topics.

The meaning of life

When pondering difficult situations, I try to get a perspective of where a particular problem ranks relative to the problems of the world. Most times you conclude that your problem in the grand scheme of things is not that big, even when the problem might be really impactful to your individual self. Bottomline the perspective assures you that the world has its fair share of problems, so you have to deal with yours just like everyone else. Fair enough. (Read more…)
