Not a Small World

Recently, fellow blogger Suman asked me half jokingly if there are places in this world that I haven’t been to. Sure, I do love to travel and go to places (some of them damn near exotic) whenever the budget, boss and wife come into perfect alignment and more importantly post photographs and travelogues online. But even my travels have taken me to only a small fraction of this big world of ours. Quite a few of my close friends have been to far more places than I have. Something that can be visualized by the following maps. The first one details all the countries in the world I have been to and the second one displays all the states in the US that I have been to. You can generate your own such links here (world) and here (US).

  1. Man Anup, you’re still quite the traveling man, and thanks for sharing the links for creating our own maps — looks like I’ve got quite a bit of catching up to do. :-)

  2. Thanks Anup! I guess I’m better travelled than I thought, though clearly I too have plenty of places yet to visit.

the problem with this map is that it’s skewed in favor of the large countries. for instance, i have been to russia, canada, brazil, china, india and australia and my map will be a sea of red. you could have just spent a couple of days in moscow on business and most of asia will covered in red. at the same time, someone else would have visited all the tiny countries in europe and they will hardly make a dent on the map. the same goes for the us map.
